Irlen Syndrome is a specific type of perceptual processing problem.
It is an optical problem- an inability to process visual information
It is estimated that 14% of the general population including gifted students and those students who are good readers have Irlen Syndrome.
It is a misconception that only those students who appear to have literacy difficulties will also have Irlen. However, it is vital that Irlen Syndrome is assessed before any further assessments for SpLD or ADHD/ADD are carried out as Irlen can manifest in very similar behaviours.
Studies have shown that up to 46% of people identified with reading problems such as Dyselxia, ADD, learning difficulties and behavioural difficulties may be misdiagnosed and actually suffer from Irlen Syndrome.
It is always important to assess for Irlen Syndrome, sometimes before further assessment and intervention.
Many times, Irlen Syndrome will co-exist with other learning difficulties, particularly Dyslexia.
As an Assessor I provide an extremely detailed assessment of the client's difficulties and needs. If required, I will then work through a series of exercises adjusting the coloured overlays to relieve the vast majority if not all of the symptoms.
In some cases which are extremely severe, it may mean that the client requires glasses with filters in them. These will pass on to the professional who will perform a further assessment.
Drawing and Talking gave me the opportunity to fully explore the difficulties I was still experiencing despite having previously explored Counselling and CBT. The freedom to draw whatever came to mind and then the questions helped me to see how I had processed traumatic events. I highly recommend this intervention it helped me enormously.

Thank you for bringing a detailed, empathetic and calming approach, utilising the Still method to bring practical strategies to help with anxiety. We are greatly appreciative.

I have found the still method to be a really beneficial tool for my mental health. I feel like I have more control over my anxiety and have gained confidence because of it.

Alison has been an absolutely fantastic tutor for our son through his journey to the Kent Test and afterwards. She has helped him to gain confidence and make enormous progress that has been presented by outstanding results both on the Kent Test and all ongoing tests. Our son has been offered a place in the Grammar School of his first choice.

After having the Still method sessions, there was an improvement in my child's confidence and reasoning; she finds it easier to maintain focus on her set goals, and she is more patient and better at self-regulating. She often has anxiety attacks which before we had no working way of dealing with. What changed now is when she is feeling anxious, she can take time to name the exact feeling (scared, worried, embarrassed, shocked) which has been very helpful as it starts a conversation, and she includes us (parents) in reasoning. We can discuss and solve problems together more easily. Sometimes she even spots anxiety arising in the early stages and verbalises and seeks help.

Alison Is approachable and friendly, she puts parents and children first. Alison is also very calm and collected. I would highly recommend Alison.

Alison Has always been very professional and well-prepared for each lesson. All of her explanations are extremely clear and well thought out. It helped my son to reach difficult concepts through multiple ways of thinking and gaining a deeper understanding of the topic. Alison caters her lessons to the student's needs and this is what makes it such a wonderful and unique learning experience. Our son admires her.
